The Benefits Of The Vitamin D Therapy With Supplements

To find the best vitamin D supplement, we first have to understand how it works and the benefits it brings. A vitamin D deficiency can be quickly and effectively remedied with supplements, regardless of location, weather and season. There is also the possibility of treating people who are physically or mentally incapable of sunbathing with a vitamin D gain – for example, the sick, those in need of care, the disabled, and those suffering from sun allergies (usually there is a strong vitamin D deficiency the reason for this). Help can be given to anyone who cannot find time to sunbathe at lunchtime due to their work, school and domestic commitments. If you don’t have the money or the time to travel to the sunny south in winter, you can remedy your vitamin D deficiency with supplements.

The fastest and most effective treatment for vitamin D deficiency diseases is the vitamin D therapy with supplements. With many of acute vitamin D deficiency syndrome diseases, you can recover within a few days, as practice has repeatedly shown.

For How Long Should I Supplement Vitamin D?

It is recommended to consume vitamin D permanently. Long-term therapy serves to maintain an optimal vitamin D level at a target value of 50 ng/ml.

It is necessary to take it in the winter months, also for those who cannot sunbathe at noon in summer. When the sky has been overcast for weeks, preparation helps to prevent the vitamin D level from falling.

The maintenance dose depends on body weight and target value. The losses are 10 to 30 percent per month, with an average of 20 percent. For smokers and the use of certain medications (e.g. carbamazepine, phenytoin) it can sometimes be even more.

Recent research has shown that it is beneficial to take vitamin D daily. Vitamin D3 is quickly converted into the storage form 25 (OH) D3 (calcidiol). This is why the concentration of vitamin D3 in the blood drops rapidly (half-life around 24 hours). 25 (OH) D3 (calcidiol) is intended to be converted into the (active) endocrine-disrupting 1,25 (OH) 2D3 (calcitriol) as required. This active vitamin D increases the absorption of calcium and magnesium in the small intestine and reduces their excretion via the kidneys.

Sufficient vitamin D3 must get into the cells in order to be converted into its active form and to develop its autocrine effectiveness (regulation of over 2000 genes, prevention of cancer). This requires a daily intake of vitamin D3 or, in summer, daily sunbathing if the weather permits.

It is recommended to consume vitamin D permanently. The long-term therapy serves to maintain an optimal vitamin D level at a target value of 50 ng/ml.

Vitamin D Supplementation Dose

We recommend 5,000 units per day (for a bodyweight of 154 lbs/70 kg). At 198 lbs/90 kg or 220 lbs/100 kilograms, it should be closer to 6,000 units.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women require 6,000 to 7,000 units as the optimal maintenance dose, unsupervised infants initially 500 units per day. If the pregnant woman had a vitamin D deficiency,  the mother’s deficiency and the infant’s deficiency must be overcome.

Alternative depot strategy: once a week a capsule or tablet with 20,000 units to replenish the depot in the adipose tissue. On the remaining six days of the week take 2,000 to 3,000 units daily (at normal weight).

The type of diet usually has no effect on the vitamin D level. The vitamin D content of the food can therefore be disregarded when calculating the maintenance dose.

The vitamin D gains from sunbathing in the summer increase the vitamin D level. It is safe to combine maintenance therapy with sunbathing. Because a target value of 50 ng/ml is at the lower end of the optimal range, and even with extensive sun exposure, the vitamin D level rarely rises above 80 ng / ml. Excessive values cannot be achieved with the sun, not even if the vitamin D level is already optimal with the intake of supplements.

Anyone who sunbathes extensively in the summer and thus achieves a high vitamin D gain can stop or reduce the intake of the suplements during this time. However, this is not necessary.

We recommend 5,000 units per day (for a body weight of 154 lbs/70 kg).

At 198 lbs/90 kg or 220 lbs/100 kilograms, it should be closer to 6,000 units.

Vitamin K1, K2 And K2 (MK-7)

The calcification of the soft tissues is prevented by vitamins K1 and K2, whereby K2 has a stronger effect, especially in the form of MK7. Bone building and decalcification of the bones are also promoted by K1 and K2, together with vitamin D, C and magnesium.

We get vitamin K1 from lettuce leaves and green leafy vegetables, ideally in combination with healthy fat (e.g. coconut oil, avocado or butter). Fat increases absorption because vitamin K is fat-soluble, as is vitamin D.

It is currently unclear to what extent vitamin K1 is converted into K2 by the intestinal bacteria and how much is subsequently absorbed.

In natto, vitamin K2 is only found in animal fat, in meat, milk and butter, provided the animals have grazed on green meadows. The green herbs in the food are important. But even then, it is uncertain whether meat and butter will at least cover the basic need for K2. To prevent a deficiency, it is advisable to supplement vitamin K2 MK7: normally at least 100 micrograms per day, in the case of osteoporosis, calcified arterial walls and calcified kidneys, it is better to take 200 micrograms. This not only prevents further calcification of the soft tissue, it can even reverse the calcification, although this process takes years. Vitamin K1 is also helpful in this regard, but less effective than K2.

During treatment with anticoagulant drugs, the Quick value remains unchanged when taking a vitamin K2 supplement (this provides information about the ability of blood clotting). This does not apply to vitamin K1, however, because vitamin K1 activates factors that promote and inhibit coagulation.

Nevertheless, even a well-dosed supply of vitamin K1 promises advantages in stabilizing blood clotting. Treatment with anticoagulant drugs (vitamin K antagonists) poses a risk of accelerated calcification of the vessel walls. Vitamin K2 in combination with vitamin D and magnesium helps against this.

A higher intake of vitamin K1 through food is associated with a higher life expectancy. Even people with advanced arteriosclerosis have a lower risk of heart attack and death with vitamin K. Therefore, any restriction of the vitamin K intake should be viewed critically.

To prevent a deficiency, it is advisable to supplement vitamin K2 MK7; normally at least 100 micrograms per day,

in the case of osteoporosis, calcified arterial walls and calcified kidneys, it is better to take 200 micrograms.

Summary

We recommend 5,000 units per day (for a body weight of 154 lbs/70 kg).

At 198 lbs/90 kg or 220 lbs/100 kilograms, it should be closer to 6,000 units.

An optimal vitamin D level should be aimed for and maintained for life – 50 to 90 ng/ml.

Taking vitamin K2. At least 100 micrograms K2 MK7 daily for healthy people. 200 micrograms for osteoporosis, also for patients with calcified arterial walls or calcified kidneys.
